The Apollo 16 mission was the tenth crewed mission in the United States Apollo program. It was launched on April 16, 1972, and was the fifth to land on the Moon. The crew consisted of Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke, and Command Module Pilot Thomas Mattingly.

The mission's objectives included collecting samples from the lunar highlands and conducting experiments on the lunar surface. The crew spent 71 hours on the Moon, during which they collected 95.8 kg (211.2 lb) of lunar samples and traveled 26.7 km (16.6 mi) in the Lunar Roving Vehicle.

Medals and medallions commemorating space missions like Apollo 16 were commonly produced as souvenirs and collectibles. These items often feature imagery related to the mission, such as the crew, spacecraft, or lunar surface activities. They serve as tangible reminders of humanity's exploration of space and are popular among space enthusiasts and collectors.
