Ernest James Haycox (1899-1950) was an American writer of Westerns who is widely regarded as one the great novelists of the 1930s and 1940s. Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein were among his many admirers. Several of his Westerns were adapted for the silver screen, including Stagecoach, the movie that launched John Wayne into stardom.
Earthbreakers was one of his last novels, appearing posthumously in 1952. The story follows an early Oregon Trail pioneer, Ross Burnett, who crosses the Great Plains and Mountains by wagon, driven by a nameless ambition or restlessness. Gradually he comes to understand what he needs and wants.
